AboutPierre-Auguste Renoir was born on the 12th of February, 1841, in Limoges. He was apprenticed in Paris by a group of porcelain painters and later passed the Ecole des Beaux - Arts exam. After, he joined Charles Gleyre's studio. At Glere's studio, Renoir became good friends with Claude Monet and they began to paint together. In 1874, Renoir and several others including Monet organised their own exhibition. Their works were labelled as Impressionism. At his second exhibition, Renoir's work became more popular. In 1881, Renoir visited Italy. He slowly departed from the Impressionist style, developing his own unique style. He combined both styles to create something totally different. Renoir's mistress, Aline Charigot, gave birth to a son, Pierre, in 1885. He found a winter home in Cagnes but started to suffer from arthritis and rheumatism. In 1894, a secon son named Jean was born and Claude in 1901. Renoir's arthritis became worse and it became significantly difficult for him to continue painting. Despite his disabilities he carried on painting right up to the last year of his life. Pierre-Auguste Renoir died at Cagnes on the 3rd of December, 1919. |
