AboutPeter Paul Rubens was born on the 29th June 1577, at Siegen in Westphalia. In his teenage years Rubens studied art. Otto Van Veen advised Rubens to go to Italy, and in 1600 he went to Venice. From Venice, Rubens went to be in the position of Court Painter to the Duke of Mantua, Vincenzo Gonzaga. Rubens, in 1603, was sent to Madrid where he came acrss the work of Titian and Raphael. From there, he rapidly made course to Antwerp in 1608 to see his dying mother but was too late. His mind was set on returning to Italy, but was offered the job of Court Painter to the Spanish governors of the Netherlands. From there on, Rubens spent the rest of his life in Antwerp. He married Isabella Brant, and for seventeen years thir marriage carried on. Rubens had a large studio, employing many artists. Commisions from the likes of Philip III and Charles I made Rubens very famous. He was involved in numerous diplomatic missions and was knighted by Charles 1 himself in 1630. Rubens's wife died n 1626, although married again in 1630 to Helene Fourment. He carried on painting throughout his life but fell ill making it difficult to paint. On the 30th May 1640, Peter Paul Rubens died.
