In the mid-20th century Brampton Courtyard was the Hedley Taylor Woodyard.
Before then we know it was also a coal yard, using horse and cart to distribute the coal to all the houses in the area with traditional coal-burning fires. There was also a blacksmiths by the name of 'Ashbys' that ran out of what is now a tenant unit, currently occupied by a chocolatier!
We also know that Old Hall Road, off which we are situated, used to be called Cross Street West.
At the start of 2007, we decided to name the Courtyard as Brampton Courtyard as it gives you an easy name to remember, and make it easier for people to find us!
We have set up a website at www.bramptoncourtyard.co.uk with information on the tenants in the courtyard and detailed information on how to reach us.
Unfortunately we do not know that much about the early history of our building, or Brampton Courtyard! If you know anything about this area, we would love to hear from you. E-Mail our webmaster at jonathan@bartongalleries.com and we'll be sure to add the info to this page with appropriate acknowledgements.
