Thomas Lawrence was a leading English portrait painter. He painted dozens of great portraits from his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte in 1790, until his death aged 60 in 1830.
Following the death of Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1791, King George III appointed him "painter-in-ordinary to his majesty". He was later made the 4th president of the Royal Academy, succeeding Benjamin West.
He had a huge customer base drawn mainly from nobility and notables of his time, with important works such as his portrait of the Duke of Wellington and other heroes of the Napoleonic wars. See our reproduction of that masterful portrait and others here
His faces often have a clarity and a depth of gaze which is astonishing, revealing personalities that emerge from antiquity and seem to communicate directly with the viewer, even on his many unfinished works, such as this portrait from National Galleries Scotland visit
Although most of his work remains in the UK, the original of this reproduction hangs in the Met Museum visit
