After witnessing and reporting from the front lines of the American civil war, Homer traveled to Europe where he was influenced by the emerging scene in art of painting “en plain air”. After returning home he produced a number of naturalistic works celebrating mid 19th century American life, including this one which was completed around the time of the centennial of the USA.
