The young man in this painting has never been identified, and it's origins remain a mystery too as no-one knows who commissioned it or why - or even where it spent the first century of it's existence.
The medal he is holding displays the profile of what is assumed to be Cosimo de' Medici. It is an imitation of a medal made of gilded gesso and inset into the portrait.
While the subject remains unknown, the composition and subject are very interesting and continue to spark debates with artists all over the world.
