Primavera c. 1482 by Sandro Botticelli

Primavera c. 1482 by Sandro Botticelli, 1482

Original Size: 124 x 80"

The Primavera, which means “Spring”, is a fantastic example of Botticelli's precise and bold use of fine lines. The precise meaning of the painting is unknown, but experts have concluded that it was created for the marriage of Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco in May, 1482.

The scene hosts a group of figures in an orange grove - note; the Medici family had adopted this tree as a family symbol. We see Venus and her son Cupid, Mercury the God of May, The Three Graces in lace dresses, Flora and Zephyrus. This style and classical subject matter was hugely popular during the Renaissance as the desire for lavish themes and graceful figures swept the nation.
