Queen Charlotte by Thomas Lawrence

Queen Charlotte by Thomas Lawrence, 1789

Original Size: 58 x 94"

This was Thomas Lawrence's first Royal commission - Queen Charlotte in 1789. The Queen sat for Lawrence unwillingly after her husband - George III - had been taken ill under insanity.

The pearl bracelets on Queen Charlotte's wrists were part of the king's wedding gift to her; one clasp contains his portrait miniature, the other his royal monogram. - Nationally Gallery website.

Although the portrait was considered to be very like Queen Charlotte, it unfortunately didn't impress the King or Queen and remained in the artist's possession.
