Our Lady & St John, Goring-on-Thames Altar Panels

Back in 2016, Father Antony Conlon at Our Lady & St John church in Goring-on-Thames contacted us about an ambitious idea he had. In accordance with thinking at the time, the church had previously been stripped of decoration and he felt it needed a little visual “lift”.

Father Antony had been discussing some options for renewal with Bishop Philip Egan of the Portsmouth Diocese, who had commissioned works from us before, and he suggested we might be able to help.

One of Father Antony’s ideas was to add some decorative panels to the plain wooden altar, seen here in close up

His idea was to use the lower panels of the Ghent Altar piece (“Adoration of the Mystic Lamb”) by the Van Eyck brothers, as the basis for decorative panels to be inserted into the recesses of the altar at Our Lady & St John’s

First we divided the image up into sections that could fit within the spaces whilst maintaining the integrity of both the individual panels and the tableau as a whole. A simple visual mock-up helped to show what was achievable.

Once we knew we had a workable solution we went to work to create a prototype using simplified image crops, professionally printed and framed to the exact dimensions needed.

Our artist then produced exact replica paintings of the panels in oils on a fine linen canvas. For added authenticity and to give better structure and protection the canvases were then mounted directly onto wooden panels before framing in a thin gold metal frame
