Hyde Park by Camille Pissarro

Sometimes referred to as the “Father of Impressionism” Camille Pissarro was influenced by respected masters like Corot and Courbet. He upheld the emerging artistic temperament of the time: a modernist reaction against strict classicism and an empathy with the natural world and the “common man”. “Let nature be your guide” was his motto. Pissarro’s vision of naturalism, in both rustic and urban settings influenced, and flourished under, followers such as Cezanne and Gauguin.

Through the troubled times in mainland Europe of the late 19th century, Pissarro often visited England, and painted many scenes in and around London. “Hyde Park” was painted in 1890.

Pissarro painted beautiful rustic landscapes and studies of peasant life as well as modern city scenes, and captured a changing world in 19th century Europe. He briefly adopted “Pointillism”, famously developed by George Seurat, as seen in Boulevard Montmartre at Night (below), but returned to a more impressionistic style in later life.
