Portrait of Sir Henry Clinton

This portrait, commissioned for personal enjoyment, needed to be highly accurate in order to capture the essence of the family attributes.

We are adept at tracking down artwork and so were able to find a print for sale from the American Museum in Britain

Sir Henry Clinton (1730-1795) was a British military officer serving in the Seven Years War and the American War of Independence. He was Commander in Chief at the surrender of the British at Yorktown, the last battle in the North American theatre prompting the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict. In later life he pursued his political career at home and was due to take up his new post as Governor of Gibraltar when he died.

Having achieved the vital facial characteristics required from a highly accurate reproduction we received great feedback on the painting from our client along with his approval and sign off. Next we needed to find a frame suitable for this prestigious commission.

Our range of traditional English period frames are hand made and hand finished, offering bespoke styling and colouring. They are exactly the sort of frames you see in museums and galleries across the globe and can be aged with various handcrafted techniques and washes. They are superb quality, conveying authenticity and class.

We suggested a bespoke adaptation of our "Superior Swept" frame in an imposing 5.5" width, and created this "mock-up" to show how the painting would look in the frame.

Visualizations like this are a very useful means of visualizing the end result and making the right choices. The final choice on the finish was Medium Antique Gold with a light grey ageing wash.

We have many shades of gold, silver and all the combinations imaginable, as well as a variety of effects and washes to suit all pictures and tastes.

Our client was thrilled with the end result and we think Sir Henry himself would have approved too.
